UPM’S BACKGROUND TOWARD ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (EMS) CERTIFICATION MS ISO 14001:2004
DECISION OF THE UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE (UMC)
The University Management Committee (UMC) has agreed to give approval to UPM to implement the Environmental Management System (EMS) MS ISO 14001 with the appointment of the Registrar as the Management’s Representative and Management’s Deputy Representative among experts in the fields concerned (excerpts of the 456th UMC minutes). With the appointment of the Registrar as the Management’s Representative, the UPM Quality Assurance Division thus acts as the Secretariat for the implementation of EMS ISO 14001.
Consequent to the decision, the EMS implementation planning schedule was presented to the UMC and it was agreed that UPM would obtain the MS ISO 14001:2004 certification in 2013 with the appointment of Dr. Mohamad Amran bin Mohd. Salleh from the Engineering Faculty as the Management’s Deputy Representative based on his expertise in the field concerned (excerpts of the 461st UMC minutes).
The UMC has also agreed on the creation of the EMS Implementation Committee structure, that is, the EMS Steering Committee and the EMS Executive Committee (excerpts of the 472nd UMC minutes).
Universiti Putra Malaysia is committed to provide the management system concerned via:
- compliance to the legal requirements, procedures and other requirements on the environment particularly prevention of pollution;
- development of the objectives based on the impact on the environment;
- re-evaluation and modification of the policy, objective and target for continuous improvement, and
- Enculturation of good practices towards a sustainable environment.
